The Treatment of Schizophrenia with Occupational Therapy â€Å"The role of social and rehabilitative measures has been proven to be single most effective non-pharmacological intervention for the long term sustenance of [patients with schizophrenia]† (Malik, S. Khan, Ataullah, Rana, F. Khan, 2016). Schizophrenia is severe disorder than affects a person’s ability to perform normal roles in their life. Because of the symptoms, people have a hard time finding the motivation to engage in enjoyable activities and in social contexts, but engaging in these occupational activities affects health and quality of life in a positive way (Bejerholm Eklund, 2007). Occupational therapists help people with schizophrenia express their emotions and participate in therapeutic exercises to enhance their skills, boost their self-esteem, and decrease the symptoms that persist with the disorder (Bejerholm Eklund, 2007). Schizophrenia is a severe psychotic disorder resulting in a range of sy mptoms from poor social skills to hallucinations. The disability in everyday functions, such as productivity and independence is one feature of this psychiatric disorder. Cognitive impairments and even comorbidities accompany schizophrenia. It is not uncommon to see substance abuse, other mental illnesses, or side effects from medication along with the presence of this disorder.
